Legacy (Psalm 78:1-8)

“An honest man’s the noblest work of God,”
Not him who chases wealth, to fame aspires.
God measures not that man whom men applaud,
But him who passes on the Gospel-fire.
Oh fathers, bear this precious task in mind:
To teach your children in this living faith.
Oh mothers, keep within the Lord’s design:
Desire children, guide them in the Way.
Do you not see the dreadful consequence,
If you neglect this all-important task?
With heathen families, generations hence,
Who say, “such were his words, but not his acts.”
But teach your children in the faith that’s true,
And when they’re old, they will not stray from Him,
But they, in turn, will teach their children, too,
Your children’s children serving Christ within.
And on the day your body enters earth,
They’ll stand, each generation, by your grave,
And say, “He taught us Jesus from our birth,
Our heritage of Christian faith, he gave.”
An honest man’s the noblest work of God,
Who trains his children, serving God alone,
A thousand thousands, heirs for years to come,
Will worship with their father at Christ’s throne.
