Sacrificial Love (I John 3:10-19)

The natural state of man is hate,
And native to our evil,
Imbondaged then and slaves to sin,
The primal state of people.

Yet we have seen Him intervene,
To sow His love within us,
That Gospel seed now blooming green,
And molds us after Jesus.

By this alone His saint are known,
By love alone distinguished,
Though man may try to live a lie,
Sin Christ alone extinguished.

They are the same as wicked Cain,
Who murdered his own brother,
He could not purge the evil urge,
Since by the devil fathered.

Set not your ways to worldly praise,
But to your father sacred,
What you pursue, they will eschew,
The world will bear you hatred.

This breath of hate will death create,
And everlasting dieing.
But He has saved us from the grave,
And by His love reviving.

Impassioned love, an active love,
We bear for every brother,
Our very life His sacrifice,
And in His love we’re covered.

For hate the seed to murder leads,
But we must die for others,
Like Christ then called, to love men all,
Who turned us into lovers.

But if you see a brother’s need,
Have means, but do not aid him,
Can love abide or is there Christ?
No, you have just betrayed Him.

As we have heard, love not with words,
In work and truth appearing,
Which will arise through sacrifice,
To face Him without fearing.

How To Love

When the life of your brother is threatened,
You must put your own life in his place.
When for help he most desperately beckons,
Then give up what you need for his sake.
For the Lord looked on us who were loath-full,
And risked all for the sake of our life,
With His blood He has bought our betrothal,
So would you make the same sacrifice?

And remain in the light of the scripture,
For our love only comes through the Lord,
And apart from the heavenly Teacher,
You can never hope, love, or restore.
For to love God will benefit others,
And obeying will bring His reward,
Then the best way to show love to brothers,
Is first formed when we follow the Lord.

And remove all the snares that will stumble,
Choose to love in the face of their hate.
If they nag or disdain or just grumble,
Yet continue in love to partake.
And reject all the sins that you’re nursing,
You’re forgiven – forgiven indeed!
He has taken all sin and all cursing,
Give the love you most desperately need.

Luke 20: Confrontation

“Why have this confidence?
With what authority?
How can you pardon sins?
Who do you claim to be?
How can you claim this true?
What narrow-minded hate!
Why listen then to you?
Or heed the words you say?
Why are you never swayed?
Nor care for our esteem?
Why are you ever staid?
Why your audacity?”

“Is this then your concern?
Then let me ask you this:
Why do you chose to spurn,
The truth to end resent?
When pressure then is high,
What is your guiding light?
What do you sacrifice?
What do you hold on tight?
For this reveals your god:
The idol in your mind,
And strips through your facade,
The main concern to find.
But you must give it all,
In sacrifice to Christ.
Through every pain recall:
God’s grace will all suffice.”
