Balaam’s Anarchy (Jude 8-11)

Three types of men of whom we read,
Subverting truth in these three ways:
Ungodly words and thoughts and deeds,
Pretend to grace while license seed,
And from Christ’s kingship turn away.

For they have turned to futile dreams,
In libertine defilement,
Who make their bodies full unclean,
Rebellion is the food they glean,
And on anarchy fully bent,

When Satan comes then to accuse,
Stoop not to disrespect your head,
For Michael, standing for the Jews,
Asked only that the Lord rebuke,
When incensed by what Satan said.

Stoop therefore not as foolish beasts,
Abusing all familiar things,
And always on their lusting feast,
While mocking what they can not see,
Swift judgment on them Jesus brings.

Beware of Cain whose bitterness,
Towards God led him to swiftly kill,
Beware of Balaam and his press,
Beware of Karah’s restlessness,
Licentious anarchy instilled.

Receive the words that Jesus gave,
Acknowledge Him as your true head,
For He alone has power to save,
And free us from rebellion’s grave,
And raise our spirits from the dead.
