A Government, A God (I Samuel 8:10-27)

A king will take your daughters and your sons,
To make himself a splendid retinue,
To build his army, weaponry, and guns,
To grow and manufacture all his food.
A king will cheat and steal your property,
And redistribute to his favored few,
To tax or to debase the currency,
Until he owns what once was owned by you.
A king will turn its citizens to slaves,
For all the works that will be his command,
He’ll trample on the rights that our God gave,
To make himself supreme throughout the land.
Is this a king? But no, it is a god,
An idol and Leviathan in flesh.
So will you worship this mortal façade,
Or will you serve the God who gave you breath?
