This grandest paradox behold,
Eternity: but hours hold.
The Word who can not speak a word,
A peasant who is also lord.
Omnipotence is impotent.
Omniscience babbles in nonsense.
The Light which huddles in the dark,
Divinity with human heart.
The Life-Giver was given life,
The Prince of Peace inherits strife.
Creator as a creature stands,
The Son of God is Son of Man.
The Purifier is unclean,
The Bread of Heaven needs to feed.
The richest king in poverty,
The noblest ignobility.
Ineffable -- and yet we know.
Impossible -- yet it is so.
In giving, gave Himself away.
In living, gave us Christmas Day.
